Government of Lao PDR and UN discuss new strategic
direction on development assistance framework

The Government of Lao PDR and the UN Country Team came
together for a two day meeting, 18th and 19th November in
Vientiane, to discuss the United Nations Development
Assistance Framework (UNDAF) 2012 to 2015. Attending the
retreat were senior officials from a number of Government
Ministries and UN senior management.
UNDAF is the strategic planning document of the United
Nations to support the Government’s 7th National
Socio-Economic Development Plan (NSEDP) and help achieve the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
Speaking at the meeting, HE Mr Alounkeo Kittikhoun,
Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, told participants
that, “The Government relies on the UN as an impartial
broker in the implementation of our national development
priorities.”
During the meeting Government and UN counterparts discussed
the key areas of intervention based on national development
priorities and UN expertise and strengths. The UNDAF will be
produced with a results based focus.
Ms Sonam Yangchen Rana, UN Resident Coordinator said, “The
UNDAF is a strategic document which will focus the UN’s key
priority areas of support. The key objective is to
strengthen the impact of development work over the coming
5-years.”
The Government of Lao PDR and UN agreed on five key priority
areas: Inclusive and sustainable economic growth
Governance Investing in human development Natural resources
management UXO
“The Lao Government supports delivering as one in the
context of the Vientiane Declaration and would like to see
more UN coordination efforts strongly reflected in the
UNDAF,” said HE Mr Alounkeo Kittikhoun.
