UNDP is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 166 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and our wide range of partners.
World leaders have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, including the over-arching goal of cutting extreme poverty in half. UNDP, using its worldwide network, is coordinating global and national efforts to reach these Goals.
On the Ground in Lao PDR
UNDP Country Office in the Lao PDR offers support to the Lao PDR Government within the context of both, the common UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and the Government's National Socio-economic Development Plan (NSEDP). UNDP is committed in its support to the Government of Lao PDR in achieving the overarching national goal of lifting the country from the ranks of least developed countries (LDCs) by 2020. The country's performance as measured through UNDP's Global Human Development Index (HDI) has shown consistent improvement since 1993, with Lao PDR currently being ranked 133rd out of 177 countries, and hence classified within the "Medium Human Development" category.
UNDP in the Lao PDR offers strategic support towards poverty reduction and equitable growth through the following avenues: (i) Pro-poor planning mechanisms and harmonization of aid coordination through the Round Table mechanism; (ii) Equitable economic growth approaches and regional integration with a pro-poor focus; (iii) Sustainable use of natural resources and improved access to land; (iv) Addressing the long-term humanitarian and development impacts of unexploded ordnances (UXO). A key element of UNDP's assistance to the Lao PDR centres on supporting governance and public administration related reforms and we remain committed to supporting Government-led initiatives to ensure more efficient, accountable and transparent policies and practices to protect the rights of citizens, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Critical areas with crosscutting relevance and those requiring a multisectoral response include HIV/AIDS and gender-related concerns that are addressed through tailored and multi-agency programmes.
