UNDP hosts the Resident Coordinator function and the UNDP Resident Representative is also the UN Resident Coordinator charged with UN Country Team coordination, and the Designated Official for Security charged with managing safety and security issues for United Nations personnel.

As the designated representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and team leader of the UN System, the UN Resident Coordinator assumes the overall responsibility for, and the coordination of, the operational activities for development of the UN System at the country level.  The RC is supported by the Office of the Resident Coordinator that sits within UNDP but reports to the whole UN Country Team.

World leaders have pledged to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, including the overarching goal of cutting poverty in half by 2015. UNDP Lao PDR links and coordinates national efforts to reach these Goals.

UN Country Team in Lao PDR

The United Nations System in the Lao PDR is represented by a number of UN funds and specialized agencies operating in the country, including UNDP, UNICEF, WFP, UNFPA, FAO, UNODC, WHO, ILO, UNIDO and joint UN programme on HIV/AIDS - UNAIDS.

It also includes specialized agencies with development operations in the Lao PDR, which have their offices based in the region (including Thailand, Vietnam and Japan), as well as in Italy: UNESCO, UNHCR, OHCHR, UN Habitat, OCHA, UNCTAD, ITC, UNCRD, and IFAD.

UNV, UN Women and UNCDF in the Lao PDR are represented by the UNDP Resident Representative. The UN System collaborates closely with the two Bretton Woods Institutions - IMF and the World Bank, as well as the Asian Development Bank. The Representatives of all these organizations constitute the UN Country Team in the Lao PDR. The UN Economic, Social Commission for Asia Pacific (ESCAP) is also a non-resident member of the UN Country Team.

The United Nations Country Team in the Lao PDR is committed to supporting the efforts of the Government to improve the life of all citizens, especially those most vulnerable. We work closely with the Government and all development partners for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Our collective endeavour is to assist the people of Lao PDR to achieve progress and better standards of living for all.
